Tech demo of euphoria
2008-04-25 18:39:04 by Manager
NaturalMotion has revealed a new tech demo for their engine euphoria, which will debut in Grand Theft Auto IV. The video shows how game characters interacts with objects, and this has gotten a lot of praise in the GTA previews. Star Wars: Force Unleashed is another of the many upcoming games that will use it.

I'm pretty sure pedestrians in GTA IV won't act like in that demo.

Blim, downloads are so slow man, is it normal? I was getting like 40KB/s and I usually do. Unless there is a link to OpenXbox360 I often decide not to download videos at that speed.
That tech demo looks awesome anyways. You can tell this very easy in GTAIV when you are drunk.

yet again, for me it's really a turn off when i see in games bad ragdoll physics, which is the case most of the times. this technology is really for me quite a big step forward in terms of immersion. like, just played through R6:V2, and lots of realism but then everytime you shoot a foe they behave really awkwardly, and end up in the most stupid positions...killing the realism.
CoD does it quite good, not with this procedural but with mocap, but i'd rather have mocap than stupid rag doll

1st example, in one very short clip there was the much talked about thing where a pedestrian gets its hand stuck in a cardoor while the car is speeding away.. It looked spectacular..
2nd example, a pedestrian dealt a final uppercut to the gut of the player, killing him.. As the player fell down backwards, the murderous pedestrian GOT HIS LEFT LEG STUCK BETWEEN THE PLAYER CHARACTERS LEGS ON THE GROUND, MAKING THE PEDESTRIAN FALL TO THE SIDE WHILE REACHING HIS HANDS FOR THE PAVEMENT TO ABSORB THE FALL!
When i saw that last thing, i almost cried tears of joy. Finally something truly next-gen that isnt just about textures or shaders. I'm NOT making this up, the 2nd example is in a vid somewhere on gametrailers unless its been taken down, right at the end of the clip. Cant remember the name nor find it anymore..

I would take this technology over motion capture. This is much more advanced than ragdoll.
Anyway I had demo/trial version of this program and it had some fun scenes. Great technology!

the bit where he falls down the slop just shows that the footage from the recent GTA4 trailer where a guy falls down stairs after being shot was indeed in-game footage. its amazing tech that outdoes even the best animation to rag-dol belnding. i mean, killzone 2 shows similarities in how the body reacts to being shot. but its no-where near as adaptive as this. i cant wait to run a guy over in GTA...lol...or beat him to death with a baseball bat.

The funniest thing I saw was a fatty in a car. Nico forced him out and he was running behind his car with the wheight of like a 1/4 of a tonn. It was hillarious watching him. The engine is truely amazing and I'd rather have the gaming industry focus on things like that rather than realistic graphics.

It's not just graphics related, because it also effects Nico for example. Being drunk in the game changes the gameplay.
Obviously if this was applied to a football or any other game you can see how it could change the gameplay as well as being a BIG step forwards in graphics.
I don't think this is the ONLY worthwhile innovation going on right now, but it's a huge one. Soon games without this tech or similar techs are going to look REALLY BAD.

Anyways, this also bridges the gap between graphics and gameplay, by bringing a true connection. If a game was poorly programmed today you might see a tackle in a football game that was really hard yet your character might keep running.

What do you mean a hard hit would work like a hard hit?
I haven't played any of the Madden games hence why I'm wondering how it'll actually affect gameplay.

I was merely asking how it would affect gameplay, especially in relation to a football game, and nothing you mentioned couldn't be done without euphoria despite it all looking better and more varied with it.
I'm thrilled that there's software like this. Two of the biggest things that will make games look better will be animation and lighting, and this looks to take care of one of them
