Bungie strikes hard with the second image ever released of Halo 3's story mode. It doesn't show much, but still, it's damn beautiful. E3 can't come soon enough...

I don't understand some people. You can SEE the little details in the armour if you look at the TINY areas that are being hit by light.
This is a teaser for what is to come at E3 and it looks to me more like a realistic interpretation of the Chief than the overly shiny, almost cartoony Chief we saw at E3 and in the first Campaign shot.

I can't believe you guys with your "oh beautiful" and stuff.
this look NOTHING like the e3 footage.
Bungie LIED and shows us this crap, whenever some other company or dev lies, everybody goes crazy with "ugh DOWNGRADE" "they LIED, they suck".
Just goes to show how biased everyone is when it concerns their oh so precious halo.
Really this is a serious downgrade over this, which was NOT prerendered:

The HDR reflective visor is completely gone.
Seriously keep it real ppl, though it looks much better then the MP mode, it's still a downgrade.

Chief is BACKLIT. I would be worried if the visor had extreme HDR glare in it.
The lighting is more subdued, but in no way can you ascertain it has been technically downgraded from a shot which is backlit in (what appears to be) a grassy area.
The whole point of the announce trailer was to show that light will hit the DESERT and reflect back up onto the Chief. Grass and foliage do not have that property.
As for the texture, it was explained by a Bungie team member that they felt the sand-casted glossy look was a bit silly for military kit which is designed to reduce your visibility to the enemy.

The visor could reflect a big explosion... But it would be a very close explosion and it wouldn't affect lighting on Chief. We'll know everythink in few days.

Really, what's in this?
another thing that i really love about this shot is the mood that its portraying. that single image makes it seems like you're going into this huge battle that's already taking place! Bungie did promise us massive outdoor battles and from the looks of things, it seems so!
i can't wait to see what the Chief was actually looking at in that image. are the Elites battling the Covenant? Or are the Marines trying to hold back the Brutes. heck that could a pelican that was sent in to help you out but was shot down right before your eyes!
GAH! i can't wait!

The light source in the picture is from the left whereas his left shoulder is forward facing toward the [possible] explosion which should create significant highlights, especially on what people are calling an overcast day (i.e. an explosion would be the brightest, or close to it, direct light source).

On damage, if you look on his right chest plate (to the left of his gun) you can see some deep scratches. The rest that were shown in the announce trailer are covered by the MA5C.
I like, but his armour does look a little "flat" now. *shrugs*

Downgrade...CONFIRMED! Thanks for the Frankie quote. God dammit. What did I tell you? They REMOVED THE BUMP MAP. What garbage.
Well, listen here, bungie. Like I said before, if you are going to REMOVE the bump map then u need to INCREASE the resolution of the normal map and also the specularity on his armor since u say u are going for a shiny metallic look. Because right now it looks like trash. Don't act like you don't have his hi-rez mesh available for another texture bake. I'm almost speechless (almost heh ^ ^ ^ ^).
Bungie has just let me down. They downgraded Halo 2 and now they downgrade Halo 3. Thanks a lot.

The Chief in the announcement video was using a bump-detail map derived from concrete, heh.
The Chief (and the MP Spartans) have since been given rather a lot of material love. The artists decided that the armor surfaces should actually look like a hardened metal surface instead of cast iron or "metallic sponge".
It's not blasto gratuitous bumpiness anymore. If that's what floats your boat, then too bad, our artists don't share your tastes. The materials are much more refined now (and the light play on them in motion is rather nice. :)
@Optimus, you are always happy, what can I say.
And I don't care about what people complained about here, find me a quote FROM ME, then we'll talk. I really can't believe you say the previous version looks like a toy-car, that's just ridiculous considering all the praise you had for that trailer. And I don't need to find a quote, I think that's pretty much common knowledge.
Cut in half: Lighting, textures, bumpmaps/normal(?), reflections/visor.
Added: An awful looking background with nothing worth pointing out, not even draw distance, it just looks bad.
Overall: I get an effect of an "good-looking" game, "It looks alright", it definitely won't "wow" me like the trailer still does, it looks freaking average when compared to its own trailer.

Other than that I REALLY can't see any diffrence between this shot and the E3 Trailer, since well... That shot doesn't show anything but MC.
And bad draw distance? Are you crazy? That mounthain in the background is a few miles away and it's real geometry (also confirmed in that WU, as well as the clounds not being volumetric).

There are two chopper QTVRs, scroll to the bottom to see the other one.
Bungie should release a QTVR of the MC and then perhaps there will be a little less crying from the peanut gallery.........but only a little less

Yes, I liked the "rough textured" look in the E3 trailer, but it isn't a big deal if the pock marks were displaced by some sort of new detail, be it color variations, more specularity and reflections, fine grained scratches... something, anything. It looks like they removed the shader pass for the coarse texture normal maps and didn't replace the missing detail with anything at all. And without a number of new lighting passes and effects to give it a proper metalic finish it looks very bland. e.g. the metal hand covers look almost plastic, not hard metal.
I know they are trying to be true to the Halo mythos and design concepts, but therein is the problem: The design document for MJOLNIR armor is designed for the limitations of the Xbox, not the Xbox 360.
Shoehorning the gameplay and graphics for design concepts developed to best utilize a 7 year old console isn't the best approach IMO. Maybe pock marked armor doesn't mesh perfectly with the late 90's design concept of MC (which is when the game got under development). But it is 2007 and limitations and designs are different. And while I doubt few would hold them to the exact E3 design choices -- although, notably, Bungie thought it looks very good, at least back then -- there are other decisions they could have made. If they wanted a harder smoother metal they could have designed some shaders to give the armor a much more metalic look. Heck, metal is something console GPUs do well at this point. Right now it looks very flat with noticable normal map compression on edges (ugh) and, besides the HDR pass, the model is really lacking some natural lighting touches (where is your GI Bungie?). Some of this can be chalked up to the lighting environment, but based on the Beta that doesn't go very far as an arguement.
As for the new pic... clouds look nice (hopefully real) and the hazy overcast look is done well. If it is an explosion in his visor it seems to not be a spot light (note the bloom coming from the left/sun and yet not lighting interaction coming from the explosion direction, VERY much unlike the E3 trailer... boo!) Nice draw distance, yet the mountains look low detail (pretty sure that is a height map) and the pasture to his back left looks muddy, but not unlike the valley in the E3 trailer. Trees look decent at the distance they are away from MC. MC himself is a mixed bag, with some excellent detail in some areas and yet a rubber feeling in others (some abusive normals in some areas). MSAA levels look good although this may be a resized picture as many Bungie ones are. Some nice TLC in details, like the gun as well as some smoke on the back right.
A lot of this is going to come down to LOD -- how good do things look in the distance? How "full" or barren is the planet and how good is the terrestrial texturing and shading? The game is gonna rely on its lighting and shadowing, which Bungie themselves have hinted at, but they also were pumping up the Beta in this regards which was average in these regards.
Loved the E3 trailer, lets hope MS pulls a GOW E3 2006: Halo 3 HUGE demo and it rocks hard. Right now they have a lot to prove: Did they stick to the Xbox1 design scheme or are we getting a REAL next gen, 360 Halo?

And yeah, the clouds do look horrible. They look as ugly as they did in the Beta, if not worse. Talk about lame. They looked so fake, ugly, low-rez, washed out, and just plain dumb in the Beta.
I just can't go on.... Someone cancel E3.
