E3: Crackdown presentation - Part 1

E3: Crackdown presentation - Part 1

2006-05-22 12:11:20 by snoopers

The quite controversial David Jones's Crackdown is back in video, with a 20 minutes long presentation. Here is the first half. More details below.

The developers spent most of the presentation showing us some of the "sandbox" aspects of the game. No missions, no story, no cutscenes to be seen in there. You'll just see the main character jumping everywhere, generating as much mayhem as possible and of course some car sequences, this is a GTA-like game after all. Personally I still have some reservations about this game, but it's so over the top that it could become very amusing. At least it will be if the devs take the time to rework the animation so we do not have this rather annoying feeling that this game is using the moon's gravity instead of earth's.
Technically as you'll be able to see by yourself it's much better than before. The game is smooth, the physics engine works nicely, the draw distance is ok and the city seems quite alive. We still do not really know what this game will be all about in the end, but we'll keep an eye open since it definitely has some potential.

I'm enjoying the look and "feel" of this game. Of course I haven't played it, so I can only judge on screenshots and videos of the game, but so far it looks fantastic.

That moon gravity is bit strange, but probalby good fun, when you can shoot people flying in the air thrown by some explosion or so :D I usually nag about lack of realism, mut this is clearly over-the-top cartoon action, so who cares :) It got cooperative mode too!
Any ideas about release date?

Meh. I don't see it. There is no reason to get upset over that.

I agree 100% if they do this thing correctly it'll be Microsoft's own little gta franchise. Either way I seriously can't believe Microsoft managed to pull it off. Halo 3 + GTA 4 is as big as yoda deciding to team up with darth vader :P

Game looks amazingly fun! I think Saint's Row and The Godfather are gonna have a tough time going head to head with Crackdown and Just Cause. I mean, why be a gangster when you can be a Superhero or Secret Agent. I'm glad they delayed this now. I think the extra months will work wonders for this game.

I like the look of the game now. It looks much better in motion. The explosions look cool, lol I love how the truck just makes the cars blow up after they flip into the air. This is a definate must buy for me.

wow what a perfect response lol

I just watched the video again and i'm really impressed. i think this will be the game that's more fun than GTA. Saints Row is so much like GTA that, while it's mechanically better and offers a online mode and such, it isn't fundamentally different than GTA, so it probably won't be much more fun. But this is great.

I have way too many doubts on this game, as many of you here.

Why do cars have to light up when you get close to them, but not only that, every object in the game lights up as if it were a special weapon or something, it gets very annoying.

The moon gravity is quite stupid. It's fine if they use it for the main character, but other characters too? It looks ridiculous. And finally, I have yet to see anything that REALLY sets it apart from yet another GTA clone, in fact, from what I've seen, I'm liking Saint's Row more..........other than that, who cares if these two games flop or not, we'll have GTA in 2007!

The lighting up is probably to do with the E3 showfloor demo, you don't wanna be reading instructions when you have such limited playtime. The pick/up or enter tooltip pops up over cars aswell.

It looks considerably different from GTA to me, playing as the good guys, morphing cars, superhuman abilities, crazy combinations. Taking Hulk Ultimate Destruction to the next level.

The floaty physics probably wont be on the other characters in the game in the final game. Then again... maybe it will just toned accordingly there are obviously many things that need to be worked on, but it has potential to be good if they balance things accordingly.

I like the over the top physics, but it looks like they're going in slow motion. I want the dudes to fly up crazy high in the air, but it should be taking like a third of the time for them to come back down. Its like when the rag dolls kick in they enter bullet time, but the rest of the game keeps going normal speed.

My 2 cents.

As well, I'd like to see the main character come down with a *thud* and a screen shake... maybe a little cracked cement texture where he lands, or something.
Depending on how far he falls, of course.

Wow.. this game needs a lot of work in so many different areas, I wouldn't even know where to start, but I can sorta see the potential.

Well then, lol.
(I won't watch it again, but I trust your word)

I hope the gravity/animations complement that effect.
You can't crack cement with a feather.

edit
I watched it again anyway, and you're darn right; he does!

While a lot of things need to be addressed, there are some little details that I'm really liking, such as the morphing cars, and I'm pretty sure I saw a guy lift up a metal sheet to block one of the grenades our hero threw (neat!).

Can't wait to see this finished up.
