Heretic don't bother he's purposely saying what he's saying to get under people's skins.
I certainly don't get that impression. The man played 330 odd games in the beta which is more than me (230) and I'd wager more than you. Hardly the behaviour of someone who's going to troll a Halo 3 thread for the sake of it.
Does anyone in here expect Halo 3 to look like Crysis? I don't.
No but they'll get compared anyway (just like some people will compare it to Gears and pay no regard to the differing design goals and objectives of each game). You'll see why when both are out, if not at E3.

Modding? :( How? Of the map packs? I must have missed that one but it sucks major ass if it's true >:(
There was a single file on the disc that could be edited w/ a modded 360 once they identified the MD5 checksum. I've only witnessed a few of these hacks myself.. most commonly I've seen someone roady running + blasting their shotgun w/o changing back to normal stance.

http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=13684

I don't think it's a very widespread issue, and for all I know Epic has attempted to fix it since these discoveries were made.. but it's still not very encouraging.
Well I guess it's the AAA*** game for the platform whichever way you look at it so expectations are bound to be waay off the chart. I actually think it looks good so I'm not so much in anticipation of an upgrade grenade.
I think it looks good too.. I just don't think it's particularly amazing. And I also don't think the single player game will look 2-4x better like some have suggested. And I'm a little tired of people trying to explain these issues by referring to things like split-screen and scale. Although hopefully split screen is greatly optimized over what we saw in the beta.

LOL Grift, you're dead in that pic. Guess you're not the only one with pink armor in Halo 3.
Pink is the new black. The best is when you're on the pink team in king of the hill -- I love it when the hill is all, pretty and stuff ;)

That's a very feasible exploit based on my understanding of the 360 security system. Epic shouldn't have that stuff in an .ini file. Slap accross the wrist fellas, sorry.

It's a lof of work to go through to cheat at a game mind which is probably why you haven't seen a lot of it.

Oh I agree.. storing such important information in a text file is a real dumb thing to do.. but MS encourages developers to assume their system is ultimately secure.. so I'm not sure the blame is squarely on them. Just mostly :)

I never thought it would look like the best xbox 360 game just that it would look like an amazing AAA title thats all I'm saying about Halo 3.

I believe it will look great noticeably much better than the MP and thats all I'm saying thats the height of my expectations. So I tend to be disagreeable when I hear expectations are too high or unrealistic because I don't think my expectations are unrealistic. I believe I had unrealistic expectations for Blue Dragon and it managed to surpass those surprisingly.

"If Crysis is such an unfair comparison, why not just look at UT3.. it's not hard to see where Halo falls short"

And this is where I think you don't know what I mean. Look at UT3 to see where Halo falls short? I would take Halo singleplayer looking exactly like the multiplayer with minor improvements over UT3 anyday. I really mean that. UE3 titles have a certain look to them that just wouldn't fit right within the Halo Universe.. it wouldn't be halo at all I think so I'd want Halo to look as different as humanely possible I don't want Halo 3 looking anything like UT3 or anything that I would classify UE3. You ever wonder why I always say I hope bioware uses their own engine for next mass effect game or SK uses their own engine for next too human? Because I feel only then can we get the experience and style that is more properly indicative of the devs.

Looking at UT3 I see where Halo 3 shines... I really mean it when I say I despise just about everything there is about the look of UT3 and a great deal of things involving the UE3 engine itself. Many of them I can't explain, but it just doesn't feel right to me if that makes any sense. It isn't really about graphics for me, but about the vision and style the developer is going for. If a developer I feel properly conveyed the vision they are going for who cares about the graphical details that is an accomplishment in itself and thats where halo 3 singleplayer will shine. Its one of the many reasons I think Dead or Alive 4 is one of the best looking games ever. He totally nailed his vision who cares if they aren't using the shaders people want them to use or evolving the look of the characters in a way people deem next gen (which is a common complaint I see) I'm satisfied knowing the dev nailed their vision and that is definitely going to happen with Halo 3.

Also I said any dev of similar talent could achieve what crytek did with those incredible specs if they wanted to. I know bungie, id, valve and tons of other devs would have the talent to do it, but i'm not knocking crytek for their achievement just saying I know others can match them.

I can assure you best practice advice for developers from Microsoft advises exactly against that. Of course they published the game in the first place so they're not exactly innocent!

One positive for Halo 3 is that having gone through all this and worse already, they should be prepared. Of course it will get exploited, but hopefully they'll have the measures in place to deal with what's thrown at them.

What does "look the best" even mean anyway? Halo 1/2 has art direction that single handedly spanks loads of other technically superior games and I have no doubt the same will be true for Halo 3. Whether it's got all the fancy, grand words working for it or not is something I think ultimately means very little to people (unless the tech side is what interests them).

While I still find it difficult to believe that UE3 actually turns everything into gray/brown paste, I see the distinction Optimus is going for here. Halo deliberately has more "peaks" in its visual style, be it colour, lighting, clear surfaces, and so on. Meanwhile, UE3 games (though prolly not because of the engine) seem very busy with details, cluttering everything up in grittyness. Even if the grittyness is a result of MOOOH PAOAAAAH!, it doesn't really make it better. Besides that, Halo has a very concious design on everything, sort of like.. I dunno.. Transformers or.. a super hero show of some kind, not holding back on goofyness or pastel colours to actually differentiate locations, technology and characters.

I guess that's why the surroundings in Halo are interesting, because they have character. Even in multiplayer the different surroundings have roots in the mythos, and the design reflects that - they're not just... noise like in lots of other games.

this is what i meant when i said that Halo 3 will look better than crysis in its own right!

Thats a pretty blanketed statement about UE3. I think initially the games did have a certain look, but according to the UE wiki these following games use UE3... now granted some do have a typical UE3 look, but I think it does have a pretty good variety of looks to most of these games.

^^^ Kudos to Simon for penning something in one paragraph that would have taken me 5! I concur.

It did just occur to me though, that the photomode has been confirmed today (yay awesome!) Now could they be adding in globs of AA and post processing for this and hence the resultant screens look better? I'd almost want a PGR3 level photomode in Halo 3 but of course I'd want AA in the final game too, even if I didn't notice the jaggies too much during the beta.

What does "look the best" even mean anyway? Halo 1/2 has art direction that single handedly spanks loads of other technically superior games and I have no doubt the same will be true for Halo 3.
After countless Acert's posts that Halo art is holding visuals back someone finally said it! Wow!

I myself have very very high expectations about Halo 3 SP graphics (E3 trailer level graphics in actual gameplay). If graphics don't live up to expectations then I guess I'll have to live with that. But I have a feeling we'll be playing the campaign with our jaws on the floor. We'll find out on July 10th.

Hell, that first paragraph seems to have summed up peoples feelings on Halo's visuals. And I agree for the most part -- Halo will look good, mostly by merit of art direction and not necessarily technical ability. At least I think that's what I just read. Though it really doesn't address previous claims that the single player would look like, 4x better than MP (it's the splitscreen man!).. but it is why I believe that the MP mode is already pretty.

I still don't think we're giving enough credit to other developers. The generalizations on UE3 are hardly fair -- look at Hell's Highway -- it's very colorful compared to UT3 or Gears of War. Art direction and game design can have a significant impact on that engine as well. And while I can see where UT3's art direction may seem a bit dull to some -- I'm not sure that Halo's is that much better than other games with similar production values.

Also, I'd just like to note that art direction does not hold back technology. We heard similar arguments about Dead or Alive 4 way back when -- and I still don't really believe that. That game, like Halo, could be pushed further on the tech side of things without upsetting their art direction.

All that said, I do think Bungie has great art. I just wish they'd use their best up front. Craig Mullin's deserves some IN GAME artwork -- or at least to be incorporated into package design. When you work with the best.. why hide it away in a drawer as concept art?

And yet.. that's not what Halo 2 looks like. How quickly we forget. If you expect Halo 3 to look like Halo 2 should have looked than I doubt you'll be disappointed. I can't imagine it won't look better than that.

This is probably the #1 reason for my skepticism. E3 presentations are a bunch of smoke and mirrors.. what we see isn't necessarily what we get.

Yeah, but Xbox 1 devkits had 128MB so Bungie could fill all that 128MB on that presentation and it was totally scripted and when they worked on actual game for the next 1,5 years it meant big trouble. :P Now 360 dev-kits have only 512MB so we are left only with "totally scripted" part. :P Which means not as much trouble for Bungie and this time they might be able to pull off what they initially promised.

Also the team working on multiplayer is 12-20 people whereas the team working on singleplayer is well over 80 I think.
