Phantasy Star Universe will be released next week and Europe, and Sega thought it would be a good idea to release a ton of images and artworks of the game just to get us a bit more interested. I sure want to play that game, but then I was a big fan of PSO back in the DC days.

Yakuza is developed by Amusement Vision, an in-house Sega team, and headed up by the brilliant Toshiro Nagoshi. The game was released in japan to critical acclaim and scored a much respectable 10, 10, 9, 9 in Famitsu.

I do think Sega deserves some cred for their in house stuff still.

Their publishing business is rooted in one thing alone - profits. Shit games sell too.
I think he's bitching about how they handled the translation--but he also probably has not actually played said translation--and is ignoring the fact that it's meeting good reviews..the USA release of Shenmue 2 also suffered the same fate--horrible voice overs--was still an excellent game.

And they deserve a lot of credit for their in house stuff still, AM2 alone demands credit.

It's about Japanese gangster stuff, hense the name, Yakuza. There are simularities in it's design though--or atleast, so I've heard--I haven't had the opertunity to play it yet, but I look forward to it.

Yakuza is a game that's about the japanese mafia.

But one of the major problems I have with the english translation of this game is that they tailored the voice acting to be another GTA, italian, "WHATDAFUKYALOOKINAT?!" mobster game, simply because of the subject of the game. The simple vernacular of the game is so different simply based upon the culture that's almost insulting to do things this way.

I know this game is good. While I haven't finished it (due to the language barrier), I've played about 2 or 3 hours in, in japanese.

The best thing Sega could have possibly done was leave in the japanese script and just add subtitles. But, as I said before, SOA missed the fucking point, as I'm sure many others will too.

I heard that micheal Madson is doing the dub along with a bunch of other goodfellows former actors in addition to Resevior dogs. If true, I see no point in buying this game. It's not longer about the Yakuza, as such a dub will make it no different than the usual new jersey mobsters that everyone tunes in on sundays on HBO to watch.

Perhaps it may sound like simple bitching to you, but if you know the difference between the cultures, you'll know that this is simply work done to make less cultured gamers feel less challanged by having a game in foreign language.

And honestly, if one hand of Sega is torpedoing the other, why should I be excited about anything that has the potiential to be good coming out of that firm?

Wow i just started playing Yakuza and it's really good, annoying loading times, voice acting isn't too bad.

I still think it retains it's Japaneseness even though the scripting is a little off.

Considering i don't like ganster games i'm quite impressed with this one.

That's great Jolli, thanks for the brief impressions..dying to check that one out myself when I've got the time.

Mesoian, it sounds to me like you're over-reacting to a very overstated problem with this game--a mistake with the translation of Yakuza is not the end-times sort of mistake for Sega to make--they've made worse mistakes, and decades ago too--and they've still released plenty of quality titles despite it. If you can't see that, than yeah, give up on Sega..go for it.

Like I said before, if it takes more than great games to get you excited about great games, perhaps it's not really Sega's fault. I'm not about to swear off Nintendo just because they won't import Mother 3 at all.
