The rumors have continued to build, but now thanks to a blog post from Major Nelson, it's official: the Xbox 360 has received a price cut. Beginning Friday, September 5, the new pricing for the various Xbox 360 SKUs will be as follows:

Xbox 360 Arcade -- $199
Xbox 360 Premium -- $299
Xbox 360 Elite -- $299
This news comes just over a month-and-a-half after the 20GB Xbox 360 Premium model was replaced by a 60GB model, thereby putting the 20GB version on clearance for $299. Here's hoping you either held off on that or aren't too upset about losing that extra 40 gigs of memory. Of course it's also important to note that as with this weekend's announcement of a 360 price cut in Japan, the lowest-end 360 model is now cheaper than a Wii. Assuming Nintendo doesn't rush toward a price cut for the system they still can't produce enough of, the 360 Arcade may become the obvious cheap choice for parents during the holiday season.

Major Nelson points to an article from Business Week that places this move in line with the upcoming launch of the new dashboard for the Xbox 360. If all of these plays toward a more casual market can actually pay off, Microsoft hopes to maintain their second-place position in this generation's console race.

Well, they did the same price drop for EU in March. So I suppose next March is more likely.

Arcade is the cheapest current-gen console, Premium at €269 is €20 more expensive than Wii and about 2/3 of price of PS3. Microsoft has the most aggressive pricing in Europe of all competitors and they should concentrate more on promoting the damn thing rathe than fighting with a price alone (but they should do online gaming free finally :/).

I wonder if this price cut in US will finally bring Xbox to a higher level of sales over there than it managed to do in the past or is the battle for mainstream coinsumer already over for them. The 360 as a plaform has never been better than it'll be this Holiday season, but people might ignore that. We'll see over the next for months.

Nah, I think most people don't think Wiimote as a technological marvel, but simply as more accessible device than a classic controller as well as more fun.
I hope Motion Plus will be widely supported by most developers though, as it seems to greatly enhance the original capacities.

Free online gaming is a no-go for MS (stupid, especially since it is P2P). What is REALLY sad is they don't bundle 1 month of Live Gold FREE with *every* 360 game that has an online component.

Xbox 360 has been cheaper then the Wii for a while here in Europe, I wonder if it made any difference in sales.. We never really hear about European sales unfortunatly (not just UK ones), and despite all this many people seem to think Europe is Sony-land.. I want to see actual figures, like the US NPD ones..

And yeah, if MS really want to become popular, they need to make online play free I think.. Financially I think it's possible because they make plenty on the sales of the marketplace I think.. Only thing holding them back then is the bad reliability image the Xbox 360 has, even though afaik they've already fixed that a while ago with the latest models..

Looking at the price, the ammount of games, and good online service, I don't see why any serious (core) gamer would not own a Xbox 360 in 2008..

I absolutely agree. Why we dont get sales numbers in europe is just beyond me. Chart track (in the UK does track sales) but, I think charges for their numbers.

Anyway, The 360 has been doing extremely well in the UK and I am pretty sure it's ahead of the PS3 by quite a margin. The Wii should be number 1 by now though.

In other territories: France is obviously Nintendo Land and Sony brand loyalty in other european countries is pretty much guaranteed too especially spain, italy, portugal etc I am not so sure about what's happening in Germany, Sweden, Netherlands though....

If I were to give an estimate of the makret share of each in europe, I would put Wii at 50% and 360 and PS3 at about 25% each right now

From the PR and shipments, it's been selling better in Europe then the US since March.

If it has the same effect in the US, where the brand is more popular, it could double sales to around 350,000-400,000 a month. Which is fine.

Pathetic that Silver gets a ton of great features (pretty standard free PC stuff, integrated) free but Gold pays $50/yr and all they get is P2P. Games like FM2, Halo 3, etc scream "LAG!!" and servers would resolve a lot of this as well as allow more people to play.

EA used to charge $1/mo for a slot on a server for BF1942. At $5/mo really what we are doing is paying for everyone elses Live experience and platform.

We received the image above from a supposed Woolworth's employee who scanned an upcoming retail catalog for our sicko pleasures. We can't verify the claim, but we understand that Woolies is in the midst of an escalating, retail price war in the UK gaming space. As such, what we're likely looking at are promotional cuts from the normal, £160, £200, £260 prices for the Arcade, Premium, and Xbox 360 Elite consoles, respectively. Then again, the across the board price cuts in the US seem to have really paid off so who knows.
