2008-09-03 15:36:17 Gears of Resident Evil - RE5 to implement a control system similar to GOW :(

http://kotaku.com/5044077/capcom-confirms-resident...

Oh dear god, I hope it's not a clone. The stop and shoot mechanic was what made RE4 what it is, the panic of having to shoot zombies in one place ............ I am really loosing interest in this now ....

Still, I have hope.

Well if you ask me, RE5 needed to be something more than just a RE4 clone with HD graphics. Whether this is what it needs remains to be seen.

I agree but MY GOD, this is ABSOLUTELY NOT what it needed to do. They will ruin it ... first the Co-op which I learnt to accept although I am worried it will affect what the Single player experience will be like but now this is pushing it.

The RE experience that we come to love has ended at 3, it seems ......... :(

finally they're getting rid of that god awful control scheme from resi 4, it was an improvement over the older resi evil's, but it still felt archaic as fuck. turing was a right pain in the arse. stopping to shoot wasnt much better either. it was the only part of the recent footage of resi 5 that made me cringe, that and the dated resi 4 death animations. at least now it will FEEL a little different. cos without a change up somewhere resi 5 was just gonna be more of the same. which is what i personally didnt want.

Good decision, RE4 controls are outdated. Hopefully Capcom will make modern, full-fledged controls system making extensive use of analogue sticks. There are better ways to bring tension and slower paced action than having bad controls.

Lets hope they mean what they say very loosely, RE should never be a duck and cover game, it's already shifted too far from what it originally was tbh without changing even further.
I do however see the benefits of the control scheme change, with the hectic gameplay involved the old controls just weren't upto the job. Last vid i saw of someone playin RE5 he could never keep the character looking the right way nevermind trying to shoot or dodge the dozens of enemies around him. Games with controls you have to fight just arent worth the effot.

I'll just say that I disagree with the direction all out on the most fundamental level, and I actually do feel RE4 controls made that game what it is.

However, I also know that critics of those controls won't change their minds either so I'll just avoid starting another discussion on that subject.

People also know that I've been fearing this western/eastern games mixup for a while following the "global market" trend (which in my opinion is much more devastating than the so called "casual" or "non-gamer" markets' influence on gaming) and everything about RE5 has dropped hints that this is what's happening.

However, ironically, at the end of the day I'm not worried that this'll turn into a Gears clone. I mean I am, and it is, but I'm much more worried that the gameplay can't keep up with these new controls.

If you feel perfectly in control the way you do in a Gears type of experience, you need opponents and gameplay mechanics that still challenge you on that level. It's not just about breaking free from an otherwise constricting control scheme, it's about re-imagining the entire game.

I honestly think this will expose RE5 for the VERY sub par ACTION EXPERIENCE that it is next to Gears of War. The reason RE4 was so amazing was that it never went there. It had its own way of creating tension and challenge.

This is partly what happened to Metroid Prime 3, but Retro foresaw it and made the apropriate changes to the pacing of the game.

It pains me SO MUCH that Capcom see the need to play into the Xbox 360 crowd's rigid expectations on what a third person action game should be like, and this kind of streamlining even from the japanese developers only goes to show what a monotonous future the genre has before it.

It doesnt even say anything about changing the game to include run + gun in that article, all it says is that the controls would change. "Gears Like" could mean anything and its most likely gonna be related to the cover system.

If they were to include "run and gun", they would have to pretty much have to re-design the entire game which is ALOT of work when you consider that it will be out in just over 6 months.

I don't see how they're going to create the same feeling of panic and terror then. Having to decide whether to flee or fight was what made RE4 great. You could move a way, turn around and then find them just as close as they were before! I don't want Gears of War, I want RE.

As always, I'll wait till I play this to make any decisions. I'm sure Capcom will do their best not fuck this up. Right?

your not going to get gears of war. your just getting a better control scheme, where the left stick controls movement and the right stick controls your "look". the way resi 4 controlled you'd think it was on the psp with a single analogue stick. the game shouldnt have to rely on a broken control scheme to create a sense of panic.

for me, resident evil lost its tension and horror aspects after the first game. and 4 practically removed any identity the series ever had. it wasnt fast paced enough to be an all out action title, but it sure as hell wasnt a survival horror title either. it was stuck between genres and it felt wrong imo.

at least now resi 5 has a chance to be both amazing looking AND play like a modern action title, rather then a late 90's one.

I have faith in Capcom and i'm sure this game will range from very good to awesome.
As for the series as a whole i think Code:Veronica still beats them all.

LOL, the genre future is looking the best since 2003's Holiday season. And Japanese developers have yet to learn a lot more things from the Western world, maybe some of them will catch up at some point...

"Xbox 360 crowd's rigid expectations" is the best thing that could happen actually, FPS genre on consoles has standard controls that everyone follows and everyone benefits from it, the real battle is in gameplay area. No reason why it shouldn't happen for third person games. I hate the fact that for games like GTA4 I have to relearn an antiquated, inferior controls system because developers refuse to follow current trends.

A human character in a third person game shouldn't be controlled like a tank from 1920s, which was basically the case for Leon in RE4. Capcom should move on and they are moving on for their own sake. We'll see if that's enough.

This is actually great news to me. RE4 was great, but I must admit the controls were a bit clunky....although much better than the original 3 RE games with their tank controls. I wouldnt worry about this ruining the feel of RE, I'm sure that they will still be able to create that tension of either fleeing or fighting. Just because they give us better controls doesn't mean that they wont still make us aim before firing like in other RE games. They can still have the "fight or flee" choices, but with better options for actually getting away or taking cover.

Pretty much spot on there, although 4 was still a decent game in its own right...just it wasnt really resident evil. As I mentioned earlier, any playable demos of RE5 have pointed out just how broken the control scheme actually is, single shot weapons like the pistol were all but useless against anything other than a single enemy cause you just dont have the luxury of stopping to aim.

Hopefully this will give them the freedom to improve the AI so it doesn't meander slowly towards you then wait an age to attack, the concessions to cater for the control scheme were actually starting to hurt the game pretty badly. Theres nothing more strange looking than a mass crowd of angry mutants charging at you, stopping, charging again, stopping and then eventually when they get in range they each take turns attacking you.

What do you mean, they already did that with RE4, I am all for better controls but they are ruined RE4 for me and RE5 looks to be taking that and making it worse IMO.

I would agree with that also.

RE5 is more a westernised shooter than a survival horror game which will please countless people, but they have lost many things that made the franchise good fot me, the zombies for one and the pressure of maybe being killed when you open the next door.

More like, do as you do, Trollipop. I also hardly see what that has to do with trolling you, but in your mind, I guess every comment that crosses your path from a mod must be some underhanded comment meant to deal damage in some way, right?

And no, typical, predictable even, as in your reaction to this news, in this thread.
