Hmmmm. This could be very interesting!

To be honest, Tecmo has been surviving on NG and DOA and those two genres are something square Enix really lacks. I think this could work very well to be honest. if Square treats these two franchise half as good as they are treating their PROPER Final Fantasy sequels, this could do well to those two franchises.

I think you guys are missing the point, i read it as SE wanting to get away from just being an RPG Publisher and at the same time tap more into the western market, hence going for Temco which would broaden there portfolio adding AAA action games to there stable.

True, but it would still eventually lead to evaluating what can be done with popular tecmo properties like Ryu Hyubusa in a kingdom hearts style rpg or even a full on jrpg with an epic square story.

I think this is a terrible idea, we are guna end up with guest characters Tifa and Cloud in DOA5 :S

Although I think Tifa would kick ass in a fighter but even so .. No thanks.

As Alimo says Itagaki had plans for a RPG, whether Tecmo will carry that on is anybodies guess.

I think this is a bad idea all round really, SE should stick to what its good at. (making mediocre JRPG's :P)

It would be better just keep SE characters on those games and keep DOA&NG characters on those games. I mean... think about next Ninja Gaiden with some FF characters or something... horrible idea.

Even more horrible would be some Kingdom Hearts style mix of both games. It would have a mess of characters and I would think that fighting wouldn't be as good as in NG.

Yeah I really don't think this would pan out well either. I mean as far as western appeal goes it's better than buying Secret Level (*throws empty bottle in Sega's face*) but I don't see how it would mesh well.

Just generally I'm more inclined to sign off on publisher/developer aquisitions that leave platform exclusivity alone and this is miles better than having Tecmo absorbed by MS, zapping possibilities of games happening at all because they can't be put on a suitable platform - be it PSP, PS3 or Wii - but at the same time I can't really picture any good coming out of this.

I suppose the Dirge of Cerberus could've been a good game, and if they wanna bring Final Fantasy IP out into the pure action genre I don't see a better fit for it than Tecmo, but like you guys already point out I dunno if I like where that'd leave Tecmo's own IP.

All that said, I do feel like SE will eventually need globally viable teams and IP to ensure that none of their core franchises get compromised. Last Remnant is one thing but I don't want battlefields and LoTRolls in my final fantasy please.

I see what you all are saying but I am sure that Square Enix will acquire Tecmo and will preserve their IP. The quality of those UP might even end up being better!

They obviously want something they dont have. I also dont agree that they might turn all those IP into JPRGs or something of that sort. Tecmo has been struggling lately and let's face it if Square Enix wants to grow outside of Japan, they will need somebody like Tecmo.

Nah I don't believe they're gonna turn them into RPGs. I think they're looking to expand on the types of titles they're offering and they know they need manpower and talent to do so.

However I think unless they can capitalize on other genres for that trendy "global appeal", it might compromise their own titles. I think we might see an increased focus on western values with their popular franchises and that's something I want to avoid. Last Remnant could've happened to Final Fantasy XIII and while I'm reasonably semi-excited for that game, I think that's a prospect any jRPG fan would wanna escape.

I seriously doubt Square Enix is that type of publisher/developer. In fact, them, acquiring a studio that's already well established in the western market cearly shows they dont want to compromise their existing IP to appeal more to that market but want new IPs that already are.

I am usually against big acquisitions. I hate the Activision-Blizzard thing. Also, the EA buying of 20% of Ubisoft, the devouring of Bioware and their current quest to swallow Take Two but for some reason this SE - Tecmo one makes absolute sense to me.

I think it might be at the very core of this whole buyout process. With the state Tecmo will be in, and the state they already seem to be in, they're probably a pretty easy target.

Activision-Blizzard was more of a merger, and, more of a formality than anything considering that Activision had owned part of Blizzard for quite some time. They just changed their name to play on the strength of Blizzard's brand.

Funnily now that it's official.... I kindof like it. I mean hell, why not. I remember when Square used to do other things pretty fondly. I loved Tobal No. 1, I easily prefered it over Tekken back in the day.
