How did it have a pretty crappy story ?

One of my favourite JRPG stories around, at least it wasn't as cliche as some, although voice acting FTL, I would turn it off if you can.. :S

You didn't play the first 2 did you? If you did, I doubt you would be asking the question.

No I didn't ... I wasn't into RPGS back then, but I can't see how a 2D RPG can even compare to a 3D one.

I thought Chrono Trigger was crap compared to Chrono Cross, sure I'm in a minority :P.

Don't think I've even played a 2D RPG that I enjoyed, perhaps I will try SO1 or 2 on emulation just to see what its like, but I think time will have made it unplayable to me.

Must be my mod chip or the disc then for sure. Shouldn't be a difference between my brand new PS2 and the hardware emulation in the PS3.

Will try it at a mate's with a different chip today.

It'll prolly be cheaper for me to buy a new SO3 than to send it back and pay for shipping again though.

Played on my mate's PS2 it works perfect. My PS2 or the mod is to blame. :(

I'm gonna have a chat with the place that did it and see if he can put in a crystal chip instead, which is what they were supposed to do in the first place.
I can't live with the possibility that other import games have the same issues.

Tried a bunch of Tri Ace games and they all share the same problems with sound artifacts in cutscenes. :(

All of them are imports and work fine on my mate's chipped PS2. My PS2 is like a month old, his is two yearsish.

Well I got to the bottom of it. The latest (well not the super latest but my 77004 anyway) PS2 is simply not 100% compatible with Valkyrie Profile 2, Star Ocean 3, Xenosaga 2 and Radiata Stories.

I found a list of reports of compatibility issues with the first PS2 hardware equipped PS3 where these exact problems were described.

I guess nobody was holding his/her breath over this, but I can at least sleep tonight knowing this.

My question has to instead become; are there any major plot points in SO3 told through pre-rendered scenes where slight audio screwups may ruin the experience, or is most of it realtime?

majority of the cut-scenes are realtime. You'll be fine if the little glitches during CGI scenes is the only problem you encountered.

Just started playing Lost Oddesy.. got to the scene where his daughter dies and the kids are crying etc etc Apart from the really bad burial scene (torches ...) this was one of the most well done and emotional scenes i have seen in a game, yeah i tie of them trying to push "sadness" in games, but this actually achieved it, maybe because i am a father of 2 and understand the turmoil that it would cause and how heart breaking it would be...

But anyway, bravo sakaguchi dude, bravo.

If anyone's keen on Shin Megami Tensei but dispared when Nocturne got ultra rare and ebay prices shot through the roof, an almost impossibly good bit of news is that it's recently been issued a re-print and is available in a fairly modest quantity but at a reasonable price.

(That has to be the longest sentence I've ever typed!)

http://www.play-asia.com has it in stock, but prolly not for long.

Jaleco announces new Wii RPG supposedly with a "pencil drawn" art style and proper implementation of the Wiimote for god damn once. Gameplay details are scarce (and you need some kind of special glasses to make anything out from the scans) but apparently there is some targeting going on with the pointer.

Jaleco isn't really a name that jumps out of the screen and makes you dance around with the funky letters it's made up of, I'm having trouble remembering anything they've done to be honest. I did play their "Carrier" on the Dreamcast though... as a complete stroke of randomness because I don't think there was any obvious reason to.. and I liked that so, who knows this might be good. This joins Fragile as the only proper Wii tailored RPGs on the way and I hope Nintendo acquired Monolith are up to something too.

In other, more personal RPG news, I've finished Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance now which totals my completed RPG count to THREE! *konami style 8 bit crowd cheer*

Lost Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga vol 1, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, in that order. I think Shadow Hearts Covenant will be next, because I've already messed around a bit with it.

OK, so several months ago I promised myself to finish Lost Odyssey at some point and I finally came back to it. I really want to like this game, but damn, the encounter rate and repetition of battles is killing me and enjoyment of exploration. Which is a bad thing, because there are some beautiful places in the game (especially coming from Deus Ex which I played for the past week) that I would like to peacefully travese rather than fighting these boring battles with the same combination of enemies for the third or fourth time. But I'll continue playing, I sort of like the characters and the short stories (dreams).

Yea the random battles killed it for me also, we may have put up with it in older generation games but I don't think it serves any purpose this gen (other than to piss us off)

I thought they were paced pretty well personally, but they do start to grate in segments of the game where you're supposed to navigate some stupid maze or get keys and unlock doors or whatever. There's even one bit of the game that is a particularly big FUCK YOU where you keep falling through holes in the ground, only to have to run the entire stretch again, doubling, tripling, quadrupling the random encounters in the area.

That said I think the game kind of unintentionally fools you into thinking that there is more to the surroundings than there really is. They look elaborate enough, but at the most you'll head off in a different direction and fine one chest with often pretty irrelevant things in it.
