About Kingdom Hearts 1-2
I played only first KH and I don't like it. It was like a bad Devil May Cry clone with terrible controls and camera. U must clear all worlds and it was boring and minigames was awful
IMO

I'm a serious enough jRPG fan. Not as serious as some people I know who actually studied and learned Japanese just to play them because the ones officially released in the States are always altered. They are HUGE fans.

My first introduction to RPGs was in the mid 90s and amazingly was recommended by my eastern philosphy instructor. That's a right, a professor
recommended gaming to gain a friendly understanding of philosopy and supernatural mysticism.

At the time I was a skeptical, science-minded christian. To a certain degree I still am which I suppose makes a walking contradiction! LOL! But what Megami Tensei games helped me with was to get a beginner's understanding of the power of the-alter-ego that can either support or consume it's host.

Needless to say after taking that course I became an RPG fan, but as a result of my studies I would never look at characters in books, comic books, movies or video games the same way again.

In fact I can proudly say that I was one of the few people who understood what the Matrix movies were really about. People just thought it was about Neo kicking virtual ass, but there were so many deeper things (various systems of belief and perception) going on in that trilogy that sadly most movie-goers never figured out.

I'll bet fans of Megami Tensei didn't have any problems figuring it out.

Anyway Persona took me into the RPGs that gamers really raved about, like Final Fantasy and Suikoden but I will always love the Persona, Nocturne and Digital Devil sagas. That being said, I've played Nocturne III more than 20 times and I still think I learn something new each time I play it.

I haven't really enjoyed playing Final Fantasy after FFX, but I still play them all. I've found the post FFX games a little too melancholy at times but I still play them through for the stories.

Kingdon Hearts did nothing for me and I really wanted to like those games. I remember playing and just being so very turned off. It wasn't that it was too warm and fuzzy for me, I actually like warm and fuzzy (lol), but what bugged me was how tedious the battles became.

Lately shooters and multiplaying has definitely cut into my playing time of jRPGs, and the list of games that I haven't played yet is quite honestly starting to pile up ridiculously.

For 360 I still haven't finished Blue Dragon but I did finish Eternal Sonata.

They require (at least for me) a certain mood and gaming pace in order to slip into. This usually means I have to put everything else I'm playing down to put enough distance between the various gaming types so I'm not bothered by the natural slowed down conversation to battle systems that exist in most RPGs.

Well I suppose that enough for now, I'll ramble on some more another time. Especially since this thread is shooting for a thousand pages. I expect it'll be around for a little while.

Plus the end-boss was Zeromus. X-Death was FFV.
ahhhh!!! you are ever so right, my mistake, but, yes, the FFanthology version was a bit rough.

Regarding Kingdom Hearts, it had its weaknessess, but was surprisingly lovable, not not everyone's cup of tea. Furthermore, i didn't mention it simply because i didn't think it quite fit under the genre of jrpg, because its more an action rpg, like zelda.

Oh it will be!

I went ballistic and ordered five (!) RPGs yesterday. Persona 3, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Final Fantasy X, X-2 and VIII. I'm not gonna let anything drop off the earth like Digital Devil Saga (1) has. Don't worry though, I'm gonna play them one by one not all at once. :)

I wanna buy FFVII aswelll but videogamesplus didn't have it. IX had to go to make room for nutriition this month.

I tried DDS at a scurvy pirate friend's place, and maan that game is well fucked up. I really need it... might have to sell a few organs to afford it off ebay.

Seeing s how you just got 5 games with 30+ hours each, i can't see how waiting a month to buy DDS would be a problem? XD

Well, DDS is super rare, you see. :/

The fancy edition - sealed - is going for up to 250 dollars on ebay, but there are used copies too that I can take a chance on. It's really impossible to know just how mint "mint" is on there though.

/shrug, temorary solution is all. i may or may not have done certain things to obtain a copy of FFTactics, due to the the lack of copies availiable. i have since found one and purchased it...but cripes, at 250$ thats theft right there. Furthermore, to purchase a jap version, and play on a non jap system is also illegal...so, where one draws the line is a tricky thing. I condem piracy, but i dont support theft and extortion either.

Imports aren't ILLEGAL, it just messes with profits of certain regions/divisions so companies are annoyed by it.

It's not so much about whether it's legal though. For me it's about the overall experience including the feeling that I own a version representative for what was originally released and how it was packaged. I can't relax and enjoy a pirated game on the basis that "at some point I might get the retail copy", because I might not, and then it doesn't feel like I really have it.

This might sound messed up and I can't really explain it, but as long as I can get a proper copy of DDS I won't feel comfortable playing a pirated copy instead. It's one thing when ebay has dried up and it's out of print, but it's not come to that yet by far.

no worries mate, its not messed up to feel like that. It just means you have a conscience, chapeau! But the region-lock is legit. Unless, you happen to own a region corresponding system. Thats what the firends at EB say...berhapse like thier game knowledge, they're full of guff. But wow, 250$...thats practically piracy, yarrrr. Best of luck, you made some good choices mate....here's food for thought, the rumored FFVII PS3 port!!!!!!(dun, dun ,dunnnnnn!!!!!!!)

Pff damn this thread :P

Been some research based on games named here, so many cool games :)

Im thinking get this games:
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (PSP);
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1-2;
Kingdom Hearts 1-2;
Persona 3.

Probably:
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (DS);
Dragon Quest The journey of the Cursed King.

Still seeing clips reading bit, to see if theres anything more :P

Now i noticed something about Persona 3. It didnt get released on Europe yet no?

Damn me, so many games i missed of Ps2, glad i got my Ps3 to play them ^^

Ahh, it's nice to hear that the thread is having the intended effect. It's easy to miss really good games what with the kind of tip of the syndrome effect that review sites contribute with, where they give some games like Final Fantasy a ton of attention and the likes of Shadow Hearts sort of slip by unnoticed.

Persona 3 is due on the last of this month actually. If Digital Devil Saga 2 and Nocturne are any indication it'll prolly ship with a 60hz mode.

Then again, if PAL DDS1 has any say in the matter, it won't. >:O

Fingers crossed though!

Because I'm on an Atlus rampage (their art is consistently utterly fantastic) I'm interested in Stella Deus. It looks strategy RPGy.. has anyone tried it?

@ Megido
Ahh, the lure of a good title and pretty art, I'll steer clear for now then.

Jolli; it was one of the first games I got recommended to me by my RPG guru friend. That and Persona 3 he was very passionate about. Oh and Disgaea too.

How come you need it to be playable on the PS3? Got no PS2 anymore?

Apparently Sting/Atlus have finished a remake of the Saturn RPG "Baroque" for the Wii and PS2. From the few screenshots I've seen it doesn't look too hot, but it's got a pretty unique vibe to it. I hope it turns out good.

No I sold my PS2 when I got a PS3... I was pretty much done with the PS2 anyway.

I have yet to play Persona 3, but Atlus games aren't my thing generally, I may try it out though.

I think their art style is absolutely FANTASTIC. Trauma Center: Second Opinion and New Blood both make spaghetti out of my legs.

And Shin Megami Tensei use the same style to just reeeeeeel me in.

Yea but their 2D art is very different to the 3D stuff.

DDS 2 has no 2D art in it from what I remember, graphically its quite rough looking too.
